TRINCADEIRA
It’s one of the oldest and most traditional red grape varieties of the Alentejo, with a major presence in many regional vineyards.
Bunches are big, conic, with small round black-bluish grapes.
The wines have an intense grenadine colour and a hint of plums. The herbal aroma predominates, with a touch of spices, especially pepper. After some time of ageing, the herbal attenuate, the quality and complexity of the tannins stand out and the wines of Trincadeira become soft to the palate, with excellent structure and slight acidity.
Blended or single varietal, Trincadeira contributes decisively to the quality and uniqueness of Alentejo wines.
ARAGONEZ
It’s a traditional variety from the Alentejo, where it has been used to improve the vineyards. It’s also known as Tempranillo in Spain and Tinta Roriz in other Portuguese regions.
Presents medium-sized bunches with small black-bluish grapes.
The wines have a deep colour and intense aroma of plums and wild fruits, which becomes more complex as they age. The wines are soft to the palate and slightly acidic, with a good body.
CASTELÃO
It’s very popular in most of the Alentejo. This variety is also known as Periquita.
Bunches are very small and their grapes are also small with a black-bluish colour and an uncoloured pulp.
The wines have a grenadine colour and intense aroma of fruit, with a predominance of raspberries and wild berries. As they develop touches of jam appear.
The wines are soft to the palate, slightly acid, balanced and linger in the mouth.
TOURIGA NACIONAL
Its popularity is growing all over the country; this is the grape variety par excellence for producing Port wines.
It is a vigorous variety, but bunches and grapes are very small.
The wines have a good alcohol content, intense colour and strong aroma of violets and blackberry jam. They are very well balanced, fruity and rich in tannins and they age well.
ALICANTE BOUSCHET
Originally a French variety, in Portugal, in particular the Alentejo where it arrived around 1900, it found the ideal terroir to display its quality. This is why many refer to it as “Portuguese by adoption”.
It was created in a nursery at the end of the 19th century, by crossing the Grenache with the Petit Bouschet varieties. It is a variety which has large bunches with a conical-trunk shape, the grapes are dark and their pulp is tinged red that why is called a “tintureira” (red juice grape) variety.
It produces dark red wines, with a persistent colour over the years, slightly herbaceous and red fruit aromas, with a good concentration of tannins, a well-balanced acidity and an enormous capacity for ageing.
