VINES IN ALENTEJO

GRAPE VARIETIES

The Alentejo remains loyal to the use of the traditional native grape varieties that have long characterised the wines from this region. The most important and representative ones are:

For red wines - Trincadeira, Aragonez, Castelão and Alicante Bouschet.

For white wines - Antão Vaz, Roupeiro, Rabo de Ovelha and Arinto.

Recently ‘new’ varieties have been introduced, for example Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which however continue to represent a small percentage of the planted areas.

The intense mass and clonal selection of native grape varieties in the last few years has led to an enormous improvement in the quality of the wines produced.
